Why I Chose To Be A Cloth Mama
When I was pregnant I fully intend to use disposable diapers. We had a diaper raffle at our shower, my husband and I were stocking up on diaper sizes and I didn’t purchase a single cloth diaper before Liam was born. I did research cloth and figured I wouldn’t be able to do it for multiple reasons. Once I knew I was going to be a stay at home mom I started thinking more and more about the option. I’ve had a few people ask me about why we decided to use cloth and my overall opinion on the topic, so I decided to share that with you today.
Reason Why We Chose Cloth Diapering
Save The Planet
I know that it’s a fairly small change by using cloth instead of dumping disposable diapers in a landfill. Think of it this way; each small part to play can grow into making major changes for the future of our planet.
We are a single income family at the moment living on an airmen pay. If you know what I’m talking about then you know it is NOT EASY! I will eventually go back to work as a chiropractor but in the meantime, saving money anyway we can is our biggest priority. We paid roughly $200 total for our stash of cloth diapers and do not have to purchase any more diapers at all, EVER. And for those wondering we have 39 cloth diapers total which is perfectly fine to go about 3-4 days between washes. Even then I have enough diapers clean to keep going a few more days if I wanted. We also didn’t see a huge increase in our water bill from adding the cloth diaper loads to a schedule each week. I’d say by choosing cloth we are saving at least $150 a month!
Lots of diapers have loads of different chemicals they use to help with absorption and smell. I really didn’t want to put that on my baby’s bum knowing even many “pure” brands still used certain chemicals in their diapers.
Options, Options, Options.
Have you seen all the different brands and styles of diapers? You can do velcro, snaps, pockets, all in ones…just to name a few! How could you not find something that works for your family! We personally use pocket diapers during the day and All In One heavy wetters at night.
Thinking about starting cloth? I’d recommend you check out the Facebook group Fluff Love & CD Science and do some research on your own. In my opinion, cloth is not as difficult as it seems. If you are still unsure, start small and cheap. Amazon has a pack of Alva diapers for a great price that would work for a beginner. We started with a 6 pack of Alva pocket diapers and then decided to make the leap to full time cloth afterwards.
Our favorite overnight diapers are Cutie Bootie, join their facebook group HERE. *All diapers pictured are from Cutie Bootie.*
